A couple other techniques/more to come

Here we have an Athearn BB 50 Footer I got the idea one day to use a pen eraser on. I was able to thin down the paint on the roof, and make the streaks through the lettering on the sides. I painted the trucks, and here she is in all her time worn glory:

Another way of getting the rolling stock to look worn down is to dig out the airbrush, and spray it completely with diluted grimy black with the following results:

The entire car was done this way, and even the trucks were shot the same as the body. A little white was applied to the sheet boards on all sides.

You really don't need a layout, but I didn't say that!

Steve, a lot of people think they need a layout to do all their work and pictures with. I did most of the work on my rolling stock and engines before I ever had a place to run them! When I got to finally laying some track down, I had the equipment in pretty decent shape, but most of all, I could concentrate on the rest of the RR, without worrying that my HO Paint Shop was being over ambitious with all the new paintwork! Now I can work on the cars and engines as I get them, one or two at a time. One of the things I tinkered with between layouts was a diorama and tried scenery techniques, and I had a place to show my trains. So I had my cake and got to eat it too!! (And I love cake!!)

Another Air Brush Job, and some washes

GN 3529, an Athearn BB 40 Footer, was airbrushed using dust, and I painted the trucks. The western roads rolling stock would normally show different weathering patterns over their eastern counterparts. Most eastern stock will show rust, and abuse, where the western stock will show element wearing such as dust, dirt, fading, etc.

Here's a Reading Boxcar that just showed up on the property, Hard to believe it seemed like just yesterday it was bright and shiny This was weathered using a product called Rustall, but you can make your own wash using Isopropyl alcohol and paint at a ratio of approximately 8 to 1, depending on how much color you want to add to the victim, er, project!
BEFORE:

In the upper right of the picture, you see an unusual color boxcar from the Erie Lackawanna. It's in the color i bought it, and the EL played with some different schemes.
AFTER:

And here's the car with a few years weathering added. This project took about thirty minutes to get it to this point. Not much time, and not much material make the car look a lot more realistic. It's not hard to do, either, as the wash settles around the raised areas. It's a trust thing!! But it works.

Get Rusty!!

Oh, we're going off the scale with the rust effects now!! Here's a view of the newest old industry on the PHCRR, Persad's Paint & Chemicals, a rather rundown piece of real estate along the tracks!

I used a combination of Rustall, and a mix of Burnt Sienna paint from a tube mixed with Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol) at about an 8:1 ratio. I used a paint pen on the rail, and dumped a bunch of the wash on the railbed, and washed over the tanks and piping to the building across the tracks.

Lightbulb PRR 256626 Mantua Battleship Gondola

I was looking around the RR, and came across a weathering attempt I made not too long ago. I had picked up three Mantua cars, and one of them was a gondola that I just couldn't get to run very well. So I took it and experimented with it to the max. Here's my pictures of the attempt; I beat up the sides, weathered it using chalks and drybrushing, and put in a load you may find interesting!

The load is exactly what it looks like -RUSTED METAL. I got it from a rusty automobile, (I got the idea from Lou Sassi of MRR fame, he mentioned it in an old scenery book) I think it came out pretty good for an early attempt.

Since I've never been enthralled with the performance of this car, it's been relegated to "Shop Only Service" as it looks like if it ran across the system, it would fall apart! A perfect end to an imperfect car.
