I used this technique to make a river bank but it could be used anywhere you want to show rock stratta. the best part is that it is so EASY!! Materials needed: blue or pink foam, utility knife, paint. That's it.
First, carve the foam to the general shape you want. Pic #1
next use your knife to make horizontal slices in the foam. the more the merrier. After a while it will start to pull little pieces out (which is what you want) If the knife starts to "rip" the foam, change blades. It should look something like Pic #2
I used a dark brown paint first on the recessed areas and then a lighter tan color to highlight the surface areas. Pic #3
Hey where are you buying the thick foam at. I need some and cant seem to find it anywhere

Nazgul,
If you use a very stiff wire brush, and drag it along the whole surface you get the same effect. Biggest plus is that you get the whole edge every time!

You know i was thinking the same thing. It looks as if there had been a wire bush over it. I will look and see i have been there looking and thay have small sheats of it and it is high priced
Naz,
I don't have any close ups right now, all the pic's are from a distance. When I get the camera out I will post you one. I went in the other room and looked at mine and it seems mine is finer because of the wire bristles. Your's is coarser.
