Thumbs up NS West Slope Weekend

Good Evening All,

This past weekend, Feb 18-20, my son Darryl, a friend John, and I chased trains from Altoona west as far as Southfork. Over the two and a half days, many trains were seen. For me the highlight was the ex SP tunnel motor that we caught about to go down the slope at AR tower.
In the Cresson area we got a great chance to get good shots of a pair of SD70 macs at the engine facility. All shots were taken from a public road, no trespassing on NS property.
Weatherwise it was COLD, REALLY COLD. Saturday, I doubt that the temperature got outta single digits. While at Horseshoe Curve, we shot pix in white out conditions as several snow squalls blew through the area.
Lodging was at a railfan motel in Cassandra, Pa, just about 200 yards from the Cassandra Overlook. From the room, we could hear the eastbounders crawing up the grade from the Johnstown area.
On the way home, we caught the NS local working the sand plant at Mill Creek, with two very clean GP38s.
All in all, it was a great weekend!!

Bob Rule, Jr.
Hatboro, Pa.
