PRR # 477714 in Pool Service colors. The prototype had a yellow cupola and trainphone antennas. It's a sharp looking Crummy, and adds color to the 60's, and 70's era freight trains. The Athearn is slightly larger than a Bowser product of the same model.
Details. While the grab irons are molded on, the model has a few surprises with detail, including the tread floor on the ends.
Under body details are present, with "just enough" to make it look like it has more. Here's a closeup.
Here's a closeup of the end, note the lettering, and other details. The handrails are painted from the factory as well.
I was able to purchase this for less than the mfr suggested list, as I was curious to see what Athearn has done with their caboose models since the demise of the Blue Box Line. There are many extra details, and more color schemes coming out of California, and Athearn is making an effort to appeal to the more serious hobbyist. While separately applied handrails would be a nice feature (along with Train Phone Antennas) the price dictates what you will basically get. The caboose also weighed in at two ounces, about 2-1/4 oz less than NMRA recommended specs. Athearn markets this product under Eastern Two Window Cabooses. This will appeal to the vast majority of modelers, and Athearn is always rotating their product line, so get these while they're around, as they have been discontinued in the scheme.
