The makings of a disaster scene

I really wanted to enter this contest but I just kept procrastinating. Finally, a couple days ago, I decided there was no suitable place on my layout to accomplish what I wanted to do and so I decided to make a small diorama instead. I cut two pieces of foam... one for the base, and one for the backdrop. The base is 2' wide by 1' deep and the backdrop is 2' wide by 1' tall. I then went scrounging around for parts and pieces to see what I could find. In an old box, I found 3 F7A's and a bunch of old cars that I felt I could donate to the cause. I also found an old backdrop. It's for HO I think, but what the hey, it works.

Last night, I figured if I didn't just sit down and do it, it probably wouldn't get done. I started with three old flex track pieces and proceeded to design a crash site. I laid out the engines and the freight to see what kind of possibilites I might have.

Lo'n'behold, three hours later, I had something I felt worthy of an entry!

I tried hiding incense sticks in behind things to add some smoke but it was so thin and wispy, it turned out nonexistant in the pictures. Perhaps some emergency vehicles and some equipment will happen along soon to get this mess cleaned up. Who know, it's only a secondary line so it might stay like this for a while!

Now trainwreck i mean trainNut that is a bad wreck. I would hate to have been in the Number two loco it looks like a ant eatter with it's nose in the ground. But i have to say it is a cool looking wreck. Good work.

Thanks everybody for the comments! Now you know what I was doing with my Sunday night instead of being online in the chat room with all'yall! I had a lot of fun with this one as I got to do something with my trains on purpose that I normally try very hard to not let happen.

As I mentioned in the contest thread, I can remember a wreck somewhat similar to this 18-20 years ago in Flagstaff, AZ where the cab of the lead unit plowed completely under.

You'd be surprised! With the exception of cutting the foam and applying the backdrop, the whole scene only took me 3 hours from start to finish. I tried to use incense sticks hidden in behind the cars for smoke but it came out to thin and whispy to even show up in the pictures. Then I thought I'd try some dry ice blowing over the scene or even drilling holes up through from underneath for smoke to come up through. Obviously, the latter two never happened.

Are you kidding me!!?? The rivet counters would chew me up and spit me out! They'd have to start a whole new segment just for me, "Cruel and unusual things to not do to your trains."

Not to worry... with the exception of the buried unit (it sustained some irreversible damage), the other two units will be rescued and returned to passive duty.

I like it how the folks standing out in the street and on the front porch of the hotel are just standing there watching and not running to help....I guess it's not their day to get anything by rail

Great Job on this well thought out scene!
