One loco to the other.

Hey guys i have got a Q i need to ask. Why is it one loco runs faster then the other. Ok i have a Atlas SD35 and a Atlas SD24 the 35 runs a lot faster then the 24 at lets say at 40% throttle the 24 just is moving and the 35 is moving on. i have a lot of RS3 that is faster then the SD35 and they are Atlas. i have a atlas GP-9 that runs about the same speed as the SD35. Is it the gears are the motor in them that makes up the big speed difference

Hi TM, in answer to your question the gearing can be a part of the speed difference but also the efficiancy of the motors used. On many of the oldeer engines and on a lot of the cheaper engines they used 3 pole motors which take a lot more power to get them started and keep them going. On some of the cheaper newer models they used 3 pole skewed motors that helped to overcome the amount of power that was required to run them, but the better equipment use 5 and even 7 pole motors which are much more efficiant and require much less power to operate. so they are much faster in many cases, also some need to have the gears cleaned up as they have a lot of plastic flashing left on the gears which helps slow them down and requires more power to operate. Hope this helps some.

ATLAS ,did a motor change somewhere between the first SD35 and the current ones. The new motor is much slower (and better performing ) than the old motor.

The SD24's all have this slower motor as do almost all of the newer locos. You can get fancy and install resistors to cut the voltage or spend the $18.00 the new motor costs (drops right in) or do like I do just put the faster loco in the second or third postion. This won't hurt the motor at all and just may save you a broken coupler.
