Mystery Flatcar!

CNW 5187, an unusual flatcar model, was given to me as a Christmas present back in the Mid-1970's in an AHM Train Set. It sits on the dead line stored, since it would be a lot of work to make it look better and run better. I was looking around the train room, and saw it, and I always wondered what the heck something like this would be built for. Anyone have any information, I'd love to hear about it!! Here's some pics:

AHM list this as a calcium carbide container car (5394C) in its 1979 Catalog. What does a calcium container look like?

You have asked the $64 question!!

To coin an old phrase!
I was looking all over the net today trying to find a picture of the old style containers, but no luck so far. Calcium Chloride is hauled in Covered Hoppers nowadays, but I would imagine the old way was probably something cylindrical with a very large lid on top, not much taller than the framework on the car. It's very popular stuff for a man made chemical.

I have another good one I have to locate and shoot for the thread....

Want a real mystery car? We drove people nuts with ours.
Tie a short piece of black thread the length of a 40ft car between the couplers of midtrain boxcars so when it runs theres a gap between the two cars.
When people start questioning you....And they will ! tell'em that's our Stealth flatcar with a Stealth bomber on it.

Okay, here's another one to see if we can stump the TWP panel of experts...

Any takers on trying to figure what the heck this thing was used for?? Anyone know of any websites that show non-RR Company cars??
As always, your input is appreciated (except maybe for Allegany or Domiluk...)

Mike,
I ran the reporting marks and it is just like it says, belongs to Ethyl Corp. They make fuel additives, nothing on the car.
