Engines That Never Were
Here's a place for anyone with free lance locos, or ones the prototypes never had. I've seen a few on the site in other forums, I thought it would be good to put them all under one roof (thread) so to speak! let's see yours!!

We start of this week with an FA, and FB marketed a few years ago by Con- Cor and built by Life Like. It was marketed under what they called the "Dream Scheme" I bought it at a local NMRA show, of all places at a deal!

Here's the back side view, it actually had a number of details for Life Like's first attempt before they got into their better train lines.

Here's a (poor) picture of the side vents. What's cool is that all the vanes are movable on both units.

Last pic! Here's an overhead view of the fan. What's neat is it spins as the motor turns. I painted it silver so it could be seen better. I haven't close coupled it yet, she actaully needs some work, as it shorted out one day, and hasn't run well since. I added the markers, the roof handles over the windshields, and the yellow paint for the handrails. Finding the right size wheels has been a trick, as I like to rewheel the less expensive locos
So there she is, an engine that was never seen in real life, but still pulls the occasional freight out on the PennHavenCentral RR.

My What Were They Thinking Engine
Yeah, it really is a nice looking engine, lots of detail parts, lift hooks, etc., I really didn't have a lot to add to it. The fan is way cool, but it really pulls down the engine, as it's on a band drive from the motor. Add the B unit, a dummy, and this loco isn't one of my top ten pullers. It has an interesting paint job, The PRR used Tuscan Red for their passenger units, and the FA/FB's were almost exclusively used as freight locos by every other RR on earth!

From the creative folks at Athearn!
Here's a model of a rare prototype, and an even rarer RR and paint job. NH 6502 never existed in real life, but the model makes a swell looking train puller.

Here's the front of the old girl, this was the first loco I ever purchased on my own, I got raped for $15.00 and she still runs pretty good for a stock Athearn.

I added the marker lenses, and the NWSL wheels, which made a huge difference on the engine. She's the fastest six axle in the fleet, and every once in awhile she spells old F-Unit on the Commuter trains. It would have been pretty wild if the old NH had something like this baby! (:

I still have most of my first locos including a bunch of 20+ year old blue boxes... and they are still running good! The old athearns might not be much on detail, but they seem to run forever.
Nice engine!

Thanks guys!
Athearn did things differently in the Sixties and Seventies, folks went for the pizzazz of a cool paint job, and on the freight cars, any bright colors worked! Nowadays the engines are prototype specific and have a little more detail on them. I've always liked to detail them a little more, but the hobby shops are having a hard time finding the detail parts! The SDP-40 shown is a good looking engine, and will probably run forever (barring any major trips off the table!)

Why is this one NOT real??

Pass the quiz?? For anyone who was familiar with the "Standard RR of the World", the PRR never had any engines with an extra set of headlights like the Western Roads did! (Why I'll never know...they should have had them!)
PRR5704, a GP-30 never was in real life. The engine pictured started out life on the BN as a train set loco, and I got to practice on it with my airbrush a few years ago, and threw on the MV Products lenses and added the yellow paint and decals. The motor took it's last trip down the rails of life, and now the old loco is all show and no go, unless it's tied up to it's companion F-3 B Unit!

An early attempt at paint/ decals
PRR 5750, representing an Alco C-430 sits in the dead storage track on the PHCRR. The loco sports passenger stripes, and was originally set up to run Pennsy commuter coaches.
The engine never existed in real life, it's an old Tyco engine repainted from something I can't remember (but it was red). There were marker lenses on it, and for the layout at the time, and the budget at the time, it worked for awhile. Actually, for a Tyco, this thing ran very quiet, and ran fast!
