Prototype research help needed
HOWDY,
I'm a retired Nevada school teacher who has recently returned to the hobby after raising family and career. Have been snow-birding the last three years but hope to settle in next fall and start building a room size lay-out.
While generally verbose shoulder surgery yesterday has reduced my key boarding ease. However I have had a question about the identity of the prototype for a nice, clean 2-6-6-0 brass engine I picked awhile ago. I find research to be one of the most enjoyable aspects of the hobby, but have already exhausted a still somewhat limited library and what Internet resources I have located so far. I do know it does not belong to the D&SL/D&RG or B&O, according to photo's I've found so far.
If anyone has an idea on further research resources to help me in my quest I WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATIVE.
Thanks for reading,
Jeremy

to The Whistle Post! Do you happen to know the manufacturer of the locomotive? You might be able to start there and see what road they modeled it after.

Thanks KEVIN
Good evening Kevin,
Or good morning. Surgical wound interfering with sleep. Thanks for the suggestion, but as you can see by the Q&A on eBay we all drew a blank. One complication, except for D&SL/D&RG engines most were modified with either addition or subtraction of wheel sets! One book claimed this was the rarest wheel set made. I love a good mystery! Will try to take some pictures tomorrow.
BTW - I will be spending some time at the Laws RR Museum here in Bishop, CA doing research on the narrow gauge Carson & Colorado. If I can be of help to anyone interested in Nevada short lines or the V&T, I'll do what I can. Hope to spend part of a week at the Special Collections Dept. at the university in Reno.
Best Regards,
Jeremy
Brass "HO" 2-6-6-0, do not know who the importer is, maybe you can tell me! No original box, open frame motor, front set of drivers are not powered. Rear drivers are powered. Front smoke box has #8 imbossed on the round number plate.
Q: Looks to me to be a B&O 0-6-6-0 with an added pilot truck. Done by Westside in the '70s and Aristo-Craft in 1957 or '58. I saw one of these converted to a Raritan River slide-valve 4-6-2! Mar-09-08
A: Thanks for the info.....
Q: I do not know which railroad prototype this locomotive model represents but, I can assure you that it is not the Denver & Salt Lake. The most obvious difference is the complete lack of vent details on the cab roof. The D&SL 2-6-6-0 has three while this loco has none. David Mar-06-08
A: Thanks David....anyone else want to guess what this locomotive is and importer?
Q: Looks to me like a Denver & Salt Lake mallet. Mar-06-08
A: Thanks for the info... Anyone else know who the importer is and railroad? D&SL????

Jeremy,
Welcome to the board I might be able to help you with your research. I pasted a link to a website HO Steam Central the owner operator is a fella by the name of Jan Willard. He is a very knowledgable and very nice guy. Send him a picture of your locomotive and he may be able to help you ot. Alos if your looking to have your loco up graded or converted to DCC he's your man.
There is also a link page that has several links to brass locomotive dealers and resources etc. I kow there is a Brass Guide but not exactly sure what the title is. Hope this helps you out.
Home Page for Jan Willard

I was going to possibly suggest The Brass Guide. The link to that is:
Brass Guide - The Premier Brass Train Resource
Also, if anyone already owns this guide, let me know what you think of it. I've been thinking about purchasing it.

Should this thread be moved?
It is an early model without box or manufacturer's "signature". It appears similar to an AKANE 2-6-6-2 USRA. It has a Patina finish and is also only rear wheels driven.
I have pictures, but don't understand how to post to forum.
I have not been able to locate a photo suggesting the prototype, but have learned that these engines were often modified with the addition or subtraction of leading or trailing wheel sets. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Jeremy
