Kevin is way too kind. What a guy!

We've had a cat since the squirrel incident, and the critter is allowed in the train room, even on the work desk, but NOT ON THE LAYOUT! I figured that out when I found a string of cars on their sides, and all my speed posts pulled out! My cat thinks she's a dog, and fetches and retrieves pens, so I have to hide all my writing utensils. On the other hand she climbs up over the false ceiling and does whatever cats do up there. The first time she did it I thought the squirrels were back!
That's interesting news about the oil in their paws, maybe that's why I get the sporadic dead spots after she sneaks in...
As far as making a deterrent for the kitties to stay off the layout, I'd say unplug the power packs, and plug the rails into the wall outlet direct

stopping kitty

You can stop a cat from getting on your layout with one trick get aspray bottle put about a tea spoon of vinger in the bottlean fill the bottle with water frist time you see kitty on the layout give it one good spray and kitty well not get back up there again. now don't drown the poor thing.

I have a great deterant from keeping mr. Kitty from trashing the layout but then both the 12ga and mr. I'm big and I think cats are tasty dog will casue even more damage. Mile I have this image of your cat walking around in the drop cileing and falling in the middle of your trains....not a good image.

Howard Zane has something like 7 cats in his house and one who resembles a small bear loves to sleep on his layout. Now I mainly have plywood and bench work but his layout is world class I would have to fry mr. kitty if it was me.
Hey --- I'm not 78 -- crazy I'll cop to. But being enough Indian to accept the belief that all living things Are our brothers, I have a hard time killing things without a darn good reason. There are a few exceptions--- cockroaches in the house or yard are one , a mean nasty little creature called a soleadad ( also known as an "earth baby") that is found in the desert is a definate exception. This nasty little beast looks like a cross between a spider & a scorpion, & they are fearless-- you go after one with a stick & they will jump on the stick & run up it to get you ! They are not posionus but will make you pretty sick.
My son is worse than I am , I have seen him capture a
Black Widow in the house & take it a couple of blocks away & set it loose.
Oh--- one more beastie that gets no quarter is a brown recluse spider .
