Great info on a great company!
It's an amazing thing to see how these companies were the lifeblood of this country with what they produced, and politics back then played a pivotal role in their rise and fall, along with the abilty (or inability) to change.
Alco picked up some of the best talent with their conglomeration of the other steam outfits. That Roger Locomotive Works was big here in Jersey, and made some great stuff. Alco Steamers were definitely a quality product as well, and they basically owned the business, but technology got them also. I remember seeing RS-3's and the RSC's running by my house as a kid, boy those things could lay down a smoke screen with that rough running diesel! You could hear them coming a loooonnnggg way off, too! But they really were pretty cool looking, especially when they painted them in the "Coast Guard" scheme of the CNJ! Before that they would be various shades of rust!
Thanks TM, great info!
